Columbus Race Will Air Free on Live I Sports Website
MILWAUKEE (Oct. 10, 2006) – The season finale for the 2006 AMA Flat Track series will take place at Scioto Downs on Saturday. The Screamin' Eagle Racing program knows that not everyone can be in Columbus this weekend. They also know it's a race that shouldn't be missed by anyone.
This time fans will be able to check out the race – regardless of where they are – live. Harley-Davidson and Live I Sports have teamed up for a weekend of racing for all website fans. What's the charge for being able to have an up-close-and-personal view of the champion-crowning event? Zero. This time it's free to any fan who logs onto the site.
"This is such a great site for racing fans," Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said. "Live I Sports is providing a great way to catch every lap as it happens for everyone who can't be in Ohio. We love racing and race fans and we wanted to figure out a way to give everyone a front row seat to the exciting season finale of the flat track series. This was a great weekend to do it."
Fans can go to www.liveisports.com, click on the "schedule" bar and click on the Scioto Downs event. Once a fan has logged in, a $0 charge reminder will pop up and fans will be directed to the event. The racing starts at 5:30 p.m. (ET) but the site will go live at 5 p.m. (ET), ensuring fans won't miss a beat.
The Screamin' Eagle teams certainly have something worthy of a broadcast. Screamin' Eagle factory rider Kenny Coolbeth is the points leader going into the season finale. Fellow Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew rider Jared Mees and the Texter Harley-Davidson team is in second place, just nine points away from Coolbeth. Chris Carr and the Quality Pre-Owned Ford Harley-Davidson team is third, 10 points away from Coolbeth while Wrecking Crew rider Bryan Smith and the Pat Moroney's Harley-Davidson team is fourth, 16 points out of first. Screamin' Eagle factory veteran and Coolbeth's teammate, Rich King, rounds out the top five, 25 points out of first place.

This is the first time that Coolbeth is riding into the season finale with the points lead. He finished third in the final standings in 2004 and second in 2005. He's looking to make that final leap to champion this weekend. It would be Coolbeth's first championship and the first AMA Flat Track championship for Harley-Davidson in nine years.
"We're all on pins and needles waiting for this race to start," Paluso said. "This is a great example of why Harley-Davidson takes such a big interest in racing. We have great riders and crew members that have battled all season long to put themselves in a position to run for the championship at the final event of the season.
"Every one of our riders can win this race and the rest of the competition is going to do everything they can to make sure they don't. The Harley-Davidson dealer-supported teams have been outstanding all season and it's going to come down to the final lap at the final race to see who gets the big trophy."
In addition to the direct team sponsorship, Harley-Davidson will also provide support through professional flat track contingency and the Rider Support Verification Program (RSVP). Under the Screamin’ Eagle banner the support will total more than $140,000 throughout the 2006 season. This includes a contingency program for qualified Harley-Davidson XR750 riders on the AMA Flat Track series.
Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts are inspired by and built in the spirit of the raw adrenaline and power of motorcycle racing. Screamin’ Eagle Pro parts are specifically designed for race-use applications, while Screamin’ Eagle parts offer street-use performance options for the Harley-Davidson motorcycle owner. AMA FLAT TRACK TWINS CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE DECIDED AT SCIOTO DOWNS
AMA FLAT TRACK TWINS CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE DECIDED AT SCIOTO DOWNS
PICKERINGTON, Ohio (September 18, 2006) – Scioto Downs, in Columbus, Ohio, will host the Charity Newsies Hall of Fame Classic AMA Grand National presented by A.D. Farrow Co., Harley-Davidsons oldest dealership on Saturday, Sept. 23. The event is the 2006 AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship season finale and the AMA Grand National Twins Champion will be crowned.
Four riders come into the final round with a shot at the title. Kenny Coolbeth leads with 135 points over Jared Mees with 126. Defending champ Chris Carr, who recently became the fastest man on two wheels breaking the 350 mph barrier at the Bonneville Salt Flats, dropped from first to third in the standings after a mechanical failure sidelined him at the last round in Springfield, Ill. Carr has 125 points. Bryan Smith, who won the Springfield Mile earlier this month, has 119 points and comes into Scioto Downs with at least a mathematical chance of winning the championship.
The combined (Singles and Twins) Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship points standings find Coolbeth and Carr tied for the lead with 210 points and two wins each. The year-end bonus will be based on combined points of the two championships. Jake Johnson secured the Grand National Singles Championship (for single-cylinder machines) on Sept. 2 in Springfield, Ill.
Coolbeth is on the verge of winning his first AMA Grand National Championship. The Harley-Davidson factory rider from Warren, Conn., needs to finish fourth or better to clinch the title. Coolbeth has been knocking on the door in recent years. He was runner-up to Carr in last year’s championship and twice finished third in the final standings in the last four years.
Coolbeth, who is in his 13th year on the Grand National circuit, hopes to finally break through this year.
“I’ve been at this awhile now and have been close a few times,” he said. “Going into Scioto Downs I feel the most pressure I ever have in my career. I’m training hard and trying to keep my mind off of it, but it’s hard to do to be honest. Chris (Carr) has been in this position a lot of times and I really admire him for being able to perform under those conditions. I’m going there to win. There’s no need to change anything in my routine.”
Jared Mees, who rides for Lancaster Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson, is one of the young guns in the championship. The Clio, Mich., rider won the AMA Horizon Award as the nation’s top amateur in 2002. He’s climbed from a ranking of 16th in his rookie season, to ninth in 2004 and fourth-ranked last year. Now Mees has the opportunity to go all the way to number one.
Chris Carr’s drive to win his eighth AMA Grand National Championship was dealt a major blow with his DNF at Springfield. You can be sure the all-time wins leader among active riders will not go out without a serious fight. Expect Carr to be near the front at Scioto Downs on his Quality Checked Certified Pre-Owned Ford machine.
With his victory at the Springfield Mile over the Labor Day weekend Bryan Smith put himself in the race for the championship. Another former Horizon Award recipient, Smith has a slim shot at the title, but hopes to close out the season with two-straight wins.
This year marks the return of one of the great old traditions from the past - the return of the Charity Newsies Hall of Fame Classic AMA Grand National presented by A.D. Farrow Co. The historic event originally ran from 1939 to 1980 at the former Ohio State Fairgrounds Half-mile. The tradition will be renewed in Columbus, but this time on the Scioto Downs Half-mile, just south of downtown Columbus.
The Charity Newsies is a local non-profit group based in Columbus, Ohio dedicated to helping families in need by purchasing new clothing and distributing it free of charge to school children in Franklin County, Ohio. The charity got its name from its original fundraising method of selling special edition newspapers on street corners.
Proceeds from the sales of event programs will be donated to the Charity Newsies.
“We’re proud to bring back the Charity Newsies,” said Gary Stolzenburg, of G&C Racing who is promoting the race. “People have a lot of good memories about the old race at the fairgrounds. We hope to restore the history and tradition of this great race. You couldn’t ask for a better venue than Scioto Downs.”
Scioto Downs is a five-eights-mile pea gravel and limestone mixture with a 14-degree banking in the corners. Riders will be able to get a tremendous run down the straights coming off the banked turns, which should make for close racing.
The track will be great from a spectator's point of view. The grandstands are covered and provide a raised vantage point to watch the racing action.
For more information on the race call Scioto Downs at (614) 491-2515.
WHAT: Scioto Downs Half-mile, final round of the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship. WHERE: Scioto Downs is located on Columbus' south side, two miles south of Route 270 on Route 23 South (High Street). Route 270 is easily accessible from Interstate 70 and 71. WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006 COURSE: Scioto Downs is a five-eights-mile pea gravel and limestone mixture with a 14-degree banking in the corners. SCHEDULE: Practice, 5:00 to 6:45 p.m. Open paddock for spectators, 6:45 p.m. Opening Ceremonies, 7: p.m. Heat races and semis, 7:30 – 8:50 p.m. Rider Parade, 9:00 p.m., Main event, 9:15 p.m. TICKETS: Call 1-866-439-3138.

JAKE JOHNSON: 2006 AMA GRAND NATIONAL SINGLES CHAMPION
JAKE JOHNSON: 2006 AMA GRAND
NATIONAL SINGLES CHAMPION
PICKERINGTON, Ohio (September 8, 2006) – Jake Johnson will go down in the record books as the first Ford Quality Checked Grand National Singles Champion. Johnson, the 22-year-old American Suzuki rider from Franklinville, N.J., overcame a first-turn crash to finish ninth at the final round in Springfield, Ill., on Sept. 2 to secure the title.
The Grand National Singles Championship is a new AMA National Championship instituted this year that features single-cylinder Grand National racing motorcycles racing on short track and TT circuits. The Grand National Twins feature Twin cylinder racing machines on the bigger half-mile and mile flat tracks. That championship will conclude on Sept. 23 in Columbus, Ohio.
This marks the first national title for Johnson. He won the series with a string of consistent top-10 finishes including a victory at the historic Castle Rock TT National in August.
“I don’t think it’s set in yet,” Johnson said of his accomplishment. “It definitely feels good. It was a goal of mine since I started racing.”
The championship battle came down to the final event. Johnson said he may have sprouted a few gray hairs at the Springfield Finale.
“It was one of the most stressful days I’ve ever gone through I’m pretty sure,” Johnson laughs. “Joe Kopp was fast all day long in practice so that didn’t make me feel too confident. Unfortunately for him he had a few bad starts and missed the main so that took a little pressure off, but it also reminded me just how weird things can get at a short track race.”
And weird it got in the final. Johnson’s entire season flashed before his eyes when he was caught up in a first-lap, first-turn crash.
“Jimmy Wood and Sam Halbert went down in front of me and I hit them and went over the handlebars,” Johnson said. “While this was all going on I just had to laugh. I couldn’t believe it was happening to me.”
Fortunately Johnson’s bike wasn’t damaged too badly and he was able to make the restart and cruise to the finish for the championship.
Johnson was near the top of the standings all season. He was second in the points chase to Bryan Smith after the opening two rounds in Daytona in March. He then trailed Joe Kopp in the standings after the Springfield TT over Memorial Day weekend. Johnson finally broke through to the series lead after winning at Castle Rock in August. He held the lead the rest of the way.
Johnson said his victory as Castle Rock was a major milestone.
“I had my doubts about how I’d do at that race since there are so many fast local riders who race Castle Rock all the time,” Johnson admitted. “The track was also supposed to be pretty slippery and I usually don’t do too well on those kinds of tracks since I have sort of a snappy throttle hand. But it turned out to be a real good night for me.”
Johnson rode a Suzuki RMZ450-based machine tuned by Ronnie Brown. He split time between a Suzuki with a flat track frame and one with the stock frame.

AMA GRAND NATIONAL SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP ON THE LINE AT SPRINGFIELD
PICKERINGTON, Ohio (August 24, 2006) – The historic Labor Day Weekend AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship event at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, on Sept. 2-3, will take on added significance this year. The inaugural AMA Grand National Singles Championship will be determined on the Fairgrounds Short Track on Saturday night.
The deciding final round of the Grand National Singles Championship is just part of the story in Springfield. On Sunday the riders move from their single-cylinder race bikes and the short track over to their big twins and the historic Springfield Mile.
The Labor Day Weekend is the traditional date for the Springfield Mile, one of the most historic racing events in all of AMA racing. Before the establishment of the AMA Grand National Championship in 1954 the winner of Springfield was the national champion.
It’s only fitting that the new Grand National Singles title be decided in Springfield .
Suzuki’s Jake Johnson leads the Grand National Singles coming into that championship’s season finale. Johnson has been a picture of consistency in the series this year, finishing out of the top five only once. The 22-year-old rider from Franklinville, N.J., is one of 12 riders who have won in AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship races this season in a year of remarkable parity.
Johnson’s consistency has given him the inside line on winning the Singles title. He needs only a sixth place or better finish to earn the championship. Joe Kopp, the veteran from Mica, Wash., is ranked second 11 points behind Johnson. For Kopp to have his best shot at the title he’s going to have to do something he’s never done and that’s win a national on a short track.
“I’ve been sitting here for a couple days going over the math,” said Johnson, who admits to feeling nervous as the finale approaches. “There’s a lot of added pressure on me for Springfield, but I’ve done well all season and I just have to go in believing I can keep doing what’s gotten me in the position to win the championship. Short track races are funny though. You can be the fastest rider on the track and still end up watching the race from the sidelines. My goal is to get into the main clean and then try to have a trouble-free race. JR (Schnabel) has pretty much been the man on Springfield’s short track. If he wins I think I only need a top ten finish. So there are a lot of possibilities and it’s going to be an intense night, no doubt about that.”
Henry Wiles, fresh from winning his third straight Peoria TT, still has at least a mathematical chance at the Singles championship, as does Johnny Murphree and JR Schnabel. All three riders have wins in the books this year.
While the newly formed AMA Grand National Singles will conclude on Saturday night on the Springfield Short Track, the Springfield Mile will be the next-to-last round of the AMA Grand National Twins Championship. Springfield will go a long way in determining who will win this year’s title.
Defending series champ Chris Carr leads Kenny Coolbeth by four points in the Grand National Twins Championship with two rounds remaining. Carr is looking to win his third straight and seventh career Labor Day weekend Springfield Mile. A victory at Springfield for Carr would go a long way in putting the Quality Checked Certified Pre-Owned Ford rider in charge of winning his eighth AMA Grand National Championship.
“On paper I may have an advantage going into Springfield, but that’s why we race,” said Carr, who will be going from Springfield on Sunday to the Bonneville Salt Flats on Monday to make a motorcycle land speed record attempt. “The Springfield Mile is a thinking man’s race. On a half-mile a rider with a fast bike and good set up can get away. At Springfield, though, the draft comes into play and having the best bike and even the best set up doesn’t guarantee you a win. That’s the beauty of this race. You have to know when to pull the trigger and make your move.”
Iowan Rich King will be another rider to watch on the Mile. The Harley-Davidson factory rider has twice won the Labor Day Weekend Classic.

HPICKERINGTON, Ohio (August 15, 2006) -- Henry Wiles has the opportunity this weekend to do what only three riders have done in the 59-year history of the Peoria TT and that’s win the historic
race three years straight.
This Sunday, Aug. 20, the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship makes its
annual visit to one of the most historic races on the AMA racing calendar, the Peoria TT.
Wiles, who won the prestigious race in 2004 and again last year, can etch his name even
deeper in the record books if he manages to win on Sunday. Only Joe Leonard, Bart Markel and Chris Carr (all Motorcycle Hall of Famers) have managed to win the national on the challenging TT
circuit three consecutive years.
“You look at Peoria over the last few years and it’s always the same suspects,” Wiles said. “It’ll
be nothing but a fight this year. Everyone wants to win that race. There’s a lot of history and everyone
wants their name in the record book of winning Peoria, but I’m going to try to keep their names out of
there.”
Wiles, 22, of Blanchard, Mich., was relatively unknown before winning his first Peoria in 2004.
To this point his two Peoria wins are the only victories he has to his name, but if you’re going to be
known as a specialist for one race, Peoria’s not a bad one to pick.
For Wiles to win his third he will have to outride the likes of former Peoria winners JR
Schnabel, of West Bend, Wis., and Joe Kopp, of Mica, Wash. Schnabel and Kopp are on top of their
games coming into Peoria, both ranked in the top five in the AMA Grand National Singles
Championship.
And then of course there is Chris Carr to consider. Carr is the “Prince of Peoria” thanks to his
13-career wins at Peoria. No one else comes close to the accomplishments of Carr, who won his first
Peoria as a 19-year-old, second year expert in 1986. But Carr’s crown has been on the shelf
collecting dust for the past five years. It would be a major story, but not totally unexpected, if the
defending AMA Grand National Champion could come back and win his 14th after five years.
Leading the AMA Grand National Singles Championship is Suzuki sponsored Jake Johnson, of
Franklinville, N.J. If Johnson manages to earn a victory this Sunday it would not only extend his lead
in the series, but it could mark Suzuki’s first win at Peoria.
Joe Kopp and Shaun Russell round out the top three in the Grand National Singles. Kopp is a
veteran who won Peoria in 1997 and is certain to be a threat this year. Russell, from San Jose, Calif.,
has scored four top-10 finishes at Peoria with his best result a sixth in 2004.
The Peoria TT has been an AMA national since 1947. The setting is a beautiful natural
amphitheater where fans can spread a blanket under a shade tree and enjoy the racing and
Midwestern summer day.
WHAT: The Peoria TT, round 15 of the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship –
final round of the GNC Singles Championship.
WHERE: Peoria Motorcycle Club I-474 to exit 3-A, then 1.0 miles west on Farmington Road, then
3 miles south on Maxwell Road, then 1.8 miles west on SR 116 (Plank Road), then .5 mile south on
Cameron Lane
WHEN: Aug. 20, 2006
SCHEDULE: Sunday (Aug. 20) Gates open at 8 a.m. – Qualifying practice at 11:45 a.m.
Opening Ceremonies at 1:30 p.m.
2005 WINNER: Henry Wiles, Blanchard, Mich., (Honda)

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – MotoWorld TV legend, Larry Maiers, and former Grand National star, Ronnie Jones, will co-host Live i Sports’ live webcast of the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship Saturday, July 29, from Hagerstown Speedway.
So far this season, nine different riders have won each of the nine races, making it one of the most competitive championships in history. This weekend, Chris Carr has the potential to become a three-time Hagerstown winner, joining racing legends Will Davis and Steve Morehead. But he will have to take on last year’s victor, Joe Kopp, who also took home last Saturday’s championship in Greenville, Ohio.
Doug Stewart, Live i Sports CEO, explained that the pressure is all about the points. “The points chase is where all the momentum is at this series and it’s just too close to call who will take this year’s Grand National Championship,” said Stewart. “It will be even more exciting for fans if the championship is determined at the last race of the season.”
Live i Sports webcast will begin at 8 p.m. EST. An archived version will be available for viewing following the race.
